Ankit is the epitome of an entrepreneur

I met him while I was working as General Manager of Operations at Jumio, where he had secured a contract to provide business process outsourcing to a high-security Silicon Valley-backed technology company, which he had managed by bootstrapping available resources.

I was particularly impressed with his unstinting personal accountability, through which he was able to deliver 24/7 services while rapidly scaling his operations. As a consequence of his impressive performance, Jumio offered to buy a portion of his business and this led to a period of rapid growth which resulted in a team size of over 500 people.

At this stage, Ankit and Jumio agreed to join forces in a combined entity, resulting in Ankit becoming the largest non-institutional stockholder. To this day, he continues to play a crucial role in the leadership of the combined entity, with the current strength of the operations team exceeding 1500. He has deeply instilled a culture of improvement and ethics throughout the team that has inspired the rest of the company, he is a reliable partner and is able to cost-effectively deliver to a specified standard.

Ankit Goyanka hired me for the role of VP, Operations to be based out of Jaipur for Jumio in Dec’17. He was an entrepreneur who sold his company and took on a stake in the Jumio entity. He was in charge of managing the India location and all of its functions. As soon as I joined the organisation we saw a huge increase in volumes owing to the Crypto industry booming. It was a great experience to see his ability to lead the team in such adversity. What really impressed me during my early days of working with him was his ability to make decisions within a few minutes while weighing the pros and cons. I also got to see the respect that he commands from the team and how the team would go to any lengths to deliver on their promise to Ankit. Another key trait that has always impressed me with Ankit is his ability to find an opportunity in any situation. He has an astute business sense and is a great leader to work with. I have seen Ankit evolve his style of leadership over the last 2.5 years from being Managing Director, responsible for all functions in India, to being a Chairman of the India board. He has been able to adapt his leadership style based on the changing business requirements and expectations from him.

Ankit Goyanka, a visionary business leader who kick-started his journey 7-8 years ago with mere 4 desktops and a handful of people saw the potential of how his and his people’s world could be and took actions to make things happen. With sleepless nights and surviving just on tea and snacks, he went ahead doing what was right, took responsibility of the failures and kept on working toward improving the situation while aggressively questioning the status quo consistently. With a clarity on his vision and an eye on the rapidly-changing market, he always took feedback seriously and made the required amendments. Besides the handful of people who he started off with him, came many more who started to follow him voluntarily, seeing him as a leader. He started taking care of this entire set like his children.

While he continued focusing on the business growth and strategies, he also hired leaders who were experts in managing the growing teams and their day-to-day operations. He ensured the leaders got aligned to the vision and mission and gave them full freedom to do what they were good at. All this was brought to test when market conditions changed and triggered a huge business inflow during November-December 2017, especially from the crypto sector. There was sudden chaos, but he got everyone and everything together to manage it with complete resilience and enthusiasm. And that was a true testament of all that he had worked for so long and also set everyone for phase II of success. As business volumes increased, Ankit felt the team lacked on a few things and which needed immediate course correction. He took a step down to drive to generate urgency in making things happen and getting things done. Everyone synced in and “Urgency X 3x” became the mantra which still holds true today. So here we are standing tall as an integral part of the impressive Jumio Corp with over 2000 strong force in Rajasthan. Having said that Jumio India led to making managing risks another priority which got aggressively worked up to only start our own operations in Barranquilla, Colombia. These experiences and observations are from my interactions with people who have been there with Ankit from the start and from my personal experiences with him over the last 2.5 years. A true visionary business leader – that is what Ankit is to me.
